Sam Houston State (8-4, 3-1) vs. Stephen F. Austin (4-5, 2-2)

HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS – Looking to keep pace with the three remaining undefeated teams in the 2019 women’s tennis race, Sam Houston will play host to Stephen F. Austin Saturday at 1 p.m. at the McAdams Center in a critical match for both squads.

Abilene Christian, Central Arkansas and Northwestern State enter the third weekend of league play with perfect 3-0 conference records. Sam Houston stands in fourth place with a 3-1 mark and SFA ranks fifth with a 2-2 slate.

The Kats, who own an 8-4 overall record for the season, saw their four-match winning streak come to an end last Friday in a tight 4-3 bout at` ACU. Sam Houston bounced back for a 4-3 win Sunday in San Antonio against Incarnate Word. Stephen F. Austin (4-5 for the year) owns Southland victories over Nicholls and UIW and has dropped matches to New Orleans and Abilene Christian.

Also on the line Saturday will be the Bearkats’ record-setting 13-match home winning streak at the McAdams Center. The Sam Houston women with 9-0 in Huntsville last season and stand 4-0 on their home courts this spring.

The Bearkats have built their success this year on strong singles play. The team sports an overall singles won-loss record of 45-24 in dual match play. Top dual match singles marks on the team include Sahaja Yamalapalli (9-3), Isidora Zivkovic (9-3), Roos Gerritsen (8-2), Lusine Chobanyan (6-4) and Karla De La Luz Montalvo (7-5). Yamalapalli, who was named Southland Conference “Player of the Week” two weeks ago has won her last six singles matches in a row including a 4-0 mark in league play.


SFA holds a thin 19-18 advantage over Sam Houston in the all-time series between the two tennis programs. The Bearkats posted 5-2 victories in the pair’s two most recent meetings, winning in Nacogdoches last year and in Huntsville in 2017. Sam Houston stands 13-11 vs. the Jacks in Huntsville.

Sam Houston will play host to UTEP in a non-conference match Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Walden Tennis Club in Montgomery. The next Southland Conference action for the Bearkats will be a road swing to face A&M-Corpus Christi and Lamar on March 29 and 31, respectively.
