HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS – The Sam Houston women’s tennis team closes the home portion of its 2019 schedule playing host to two of the top three teams in the Southland Conference race Friday and Sunday at the McAdams Tennis Center.
Northwestern State owns a perfect 7-0 Southland mark to hold down first place. Abilene Christian stands a half-game back with a 6-0 conference record. Central Arkansas ranks third with a 5-1 slate while the Kats are in fourth place at 5-2.
Sam Houston will finish the regular season next week with a road trip to Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond and McNeese in Lake Charles. The top eight finishers in the regular season will advance to the Southland Conference tournament in Corpus Christi April 26-28.
Sam Houston, 10-4 overall in 2019, have built their success on strong singles play. The team sports an overall singles won-loss record of 61-31 in dual match action. Top dual match singles marks on the team include Sahaja Yamalapalli (13-3), Isidora Zivkovic (11-4), Roos Gerritsen (11-3), Lusine Chobanyan (9-5) and Karla De La Luz Montalvo (9-7).
SERIES vs. NORTHWESTERN STATE
The Bearkats and the Demons have battled 34 times since their first meeting in 1985. Northwestern State owns a 31-3 advantage in the series. Sam Houston’s three victories came in 2000, 2006 and 2007). The Demons have won the last 16 seasons in a row including a 4-3 in Natchitoches last year.
SERIES vs. CENTRAL ARKANSAS
Sam Houston holds an 8-3 record over the Bears that includes victories in the pair’s last two meetings. The Bearkats won 5-2 in Conway two years ago and 4-3 in Huntsville last season.
