Sam Houston State junior Sahaja Yamalapalli bounced back from a loss in her first match at the 2019 Oracle ITA Masters to earn an impressive victory in the consolation bracket over one of Conference USA’s top players Friday in Malibu, California.

Yamalapalli defeated Michaela Haet of Rice in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. Haet is the Owls’ No. 1 singles player and was the Conference USA Player of the Year last season.

“We are so proud of Sahaja,” head coach Rob Hubbard said. “She’s worked so hard and deserved to be noticed on the national scene. Looking forward to her next match out in Malibu. Eat ‘em up Kats!”

Yamalapalli, the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year, was paired with eighth-seeded Anna Turati from Texas in the opening round Thursday, falling 6-2, 6-0.

Yamalapalli will face Anna Riedmiller of Denver Saturday at 11 a.m. CST.
