HUNTSVILLE – The fall season will come to an end this weekend as the Sam Houston State tennis team is set to host the third annual Bearkat Invitational Saturday and Sunday at the Kelly and Ina May McAdams Tennis Complex.

The four-team invitational, which will be a flighted round robin competition in singles and doubles, is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and will conclude the following day. The field for the invitational includes host Sam Houston State, UTRGV, Texas State and Tyler Junior College.

The Bearkats had a strong showing against the top collegiate players in the state at the ITA Regional Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M Oct. 17-19.

Junior Sahaja Yamalapalli, the 25th seed, put together an impressive run to the round of 16 after she upset 16th-seeded Olivia Peet of Texas Tech in the third round Friday. She battled 21st-seed Marta Perez Mur of Texas for three sets and twice had match point before bowing out of the tournament with a 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 loss.

Yamalapalli joined former Sam Houston State standout Fabienne Gettwart (2014) as the only Bearkats to reach the main draw round of 16 at the ITA Regional in school history. 

Senior Lusine Chobanyan missed out on a berth to the round of 16, falling to 11th-seeded Jessica Anzo of Texas A&M in the third round after winning her first two matches.

In consolation singles, junior Roos Gerritsen and freshman Emma Goedkoop advanced to the round of 16 with two wins in that bracket.
