The Sam Houston women’s tennis looks to end their 2016 fall semester tournament schedule on a high note as the squad plays host to three top teams in the inaugural Bearkat Fall Invitational tournament Saturday and Sunday October 28 and 29 at the McAdams Tennis Center.

Tournament sponsors include the University Hotel, Pita Pit and Aramark. Sam Houston plays host to Louisiana Tech, Texas Rio Grande Valley and UTSA in a format where the quartet will play each other in a round robin format that features eight singles matches and four doubles contests.

Head coach Rob Hubbard believes his players have the opportunity to finish a successful fall season with another strong performance this weekend.

"We’ve had a good fall,” Hubbard said. “We picked up some big victories while playing a tough schedule that has shown us a number of areas where we need to improve. That's a good thing.”

During the three weekends of tournament play, Sam Houston players posted victories over opponents from Alabama, Houston, Kansas, Oklahoma, South Florida, TCU and Texas Tech.

Senior Khee Yen Wee became the third Bearkat in program history to reach the third round of the ITA Texas Regionals with wins over opponents from Abilene Christian and TCU.

Freshman Sahaja Yamalapalli won her singles flights both at Rice and the Bearkat Fall Invitational. Seniors Fabienne Gettwart and Mila Milanovic and transfer Lusine Chobanyan also won their flights in the home event. Senior Carrie Casey and Chobanyan picked up big first round wins at regionals. Chobanyan defeated Lana Rush of Texas Tech, a winner of eight national junior titles in Great Britain.

Sam Houston will begin practice for the spring dual match season on January 8. The season opens with a pair of home matches versus Prairie View A&M Friday, January 19, and UT-Rio Grande Valley Sunday, January 21.
