COLLEGE STATION – Facing a Texas A&M team that reached the final 16 at the NCAA Championships last May, the Sam Houston women’s tennis team posted an outstanding performance at the George P. Mitchell Center Friday evening.

Senior Carrie Casey and sophomore transfer Lusine Chobanyon won their individual matches at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Senior Mila Milanovic came within a couple of points of picking up a third victory in the number five singles.

Texas A&M held off the upset-minded Bearkats for a 5-2 dual match victory to run their season mark to 4-0. The two points for Sam Houston are the first surrendered to any Aggie foe this year. The loss evened the Kats' dual match record at 1-1.

In Sam Houston’s seven previous meetings with the Texas A&M women since 1984, the Aggies have dropped only two individual points to the Bearkats. A&M won 8-1 in both 1987 and 2000 while posting shut outs in the other five meetings (1984, 1998, 2002, 2007 and 2014).

“I’m extremely proud of how well we competed today against such a strong nationally-ranked program as Texas A&M,” Rob Hubbard said. “The team was not intimidated by the situation and just rolled up their sleeves and went to work.”

Casey defeated Dorthea Faa-Hviding 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 while Chobanyon won in straight sets 6-4 6-4. Milanovic split sets with Riley McQuaid. A&M’s No. 5 player won the first set in a 7-3 tiebreaker. Milanovic bounced back for a 6-4 second set win. McQuaid won the match in a super tiebreaker 10-8.

A&M won each of the top three singles matches in straight sets as Domenica Gonzalez defeated Fabienne Gettwart 6-3, 6-4, Macarena Olivares topped Khee Yen Wee 6-3, 6-0 and Eva Paalma topped Sahaja Yamalapalli  6-1, 7-5.

The Aggies won the doubles point by taking the number one match 6-3 and the number three 6-2.

“Doubles still is a work in progress while the singles play was reflective of all the hard work the girls put in during the week of practice before spring semester classes started. We’ll put in a little more work Saturday and get ready for another strong program in University of Houston Sunday.”

Sam Houston and the Cougars will battle Saturday at the UH Courts in Houston. First serve is at 11 a.m.
