Final 2019 ITA Texas Regional Rankings

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State women’s tennis team added to its stellar 2019 season recently when it landed in the top 10 of the Texas Regional rankings of the ITA.

The Bearkats were the only Southland Conference school in the rankings, coming in at No. 10 in the Texas Regional rankings. It is just the second time since 2002 that the program has finished the year inside the top 10.

That came on the heels of a season that saw them go 15-8 in the 2019 spring season, including 7-4 in the Southland Conference, and advanced to the championship match of the Southland Conference Tournament.

“This is yet another nice accolade for the record-breaking season from our team,” head coach Rob Hubbard said. “This has been a remarkable year and another season of firsts that stems from the team's spirit and willingness to sacrifice, along with its hard work on the court, in the gym and in the classroom. I am very proud of how this very young team represented Sam Houston State University this year.”

The 15 wins was the most in a spring season in program history, as was the first-ever appearance in the championship match of the SLC Tournament.

Along the way, the Kats landed three individual players on the all-SLC squad, including first-team selections Sahaja Yamalapalli (No. 1 singles) and Lusine Chobanyan (No. 4 singles), while Isidora Zivkovic (No. 2 singles) was a second-team choice. The No. 3 doubles duo of Karla De La Luz Montalvo and Petra Kaszas also earned an all-SLC second team nod.

Yamalapalli was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year, becoming just the second Bearkat in history to earn that honor after a year that saw her go 18-5 at No. 1 singles for the season.
