FRISCO, Texas – The Sam Houston State Bearkats placed a league-high four players on the Southland Conference All-Academic teams per an announcement from league officials on Thursday, including three on the first team.

Juniors Brooke White and Jordyn Vaughn, along with sophomore Taylor Cunningham, were all named to the first team. Additionally, senior setter Michelle Griffith was a second team choice.

White’s academic honor comes on the heels of earning a nod on the all-Southland Conference first team at the conclusion of the regular season. She followed that up with an all-tournament selection at Southland Volleyball Championships, helping lead the Kats to the title match.

A general business major with a 3.26 GPA, she was second on the team and top-10 in the Southland in kills, going for 28 kills in win over Rice which was the third most by a Southland player this season. White had at least 10 kills in each of the final 10 matches of the season.

Vaughn earned her second-straight selection to the first team all-academic team after also taking first team all-Southland honors and earning her second selection to the all-tournament team at the Southland Volleyball Championships.

The Huntsville native holds a 3.59 GPA in accounting and finished sixth in the league in kills per set. She posted 12 double-doubles while going for more than 20 kills on four occasions.

Cunningham finished third on the Bearkat roster with 2.52 kills per set as a sophomore, while swinging at a .279 clip. Another Huntsville native, she carries a 3.80 GPA in accounting and was a second team all-SLC choice. Additionally, Cunningham was also the third Bearkat named to the all-tournament team in Sam’s run to the tournament title match at the Southland Volleyball Championships.

Griffith rounds out the Bearkat all-academic nods, making the squad for the second time in her career. The senior with a 3.69 GPA in Food Science and Nutrition finished second in the Southland Conference in assists, leading the league in SLC-only matches and posting 16 double-doubles for the year.

The Southland Conference All-Academic team is selected by vote of the league’s head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators.

Student-athletes must possess a 3.00 cumulative GPA, have completed one full year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to qualify for the all-academic teams.
