HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State volleyball team got back on the court over the weekend, coming away with the tournament title in an eight-team field in matches played both at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum and the Health & Kinesiology Center.
Included in the field with the Bearkats were Stephen F. Austin, Texas Southern, St. Edward’s, Blinn College, Lee College, Hill College and Panola College. A tremendous turnout of parents and families from all teams were on hand for the event, one that saw the Kats pick up wins in each of its first two matches in 2-of-3 format over Blinn College (25-21, 25-16) and Panola College (25-14, 25-15) before closing out the weekend with a winner-take-all matchup with SFA.
The match saw SFA take the first two sets by a 25-23 margin before Sam Houston began its comeback. The Kats edged the Ladyjacks 25-24 in the third set before forcing a fifth set with a 25-19 win in Set 4. Sam Houston then finished things off with a dominating 15-7 margin in the deciding set to walk away with the tournament crown.
“It was a great first tournament, which provided the team the opportunity to test various lineups and player personnel,” assistant coach Charlie Olson said. “The team exhibited tremendous strength in serving and passing and got great offensive production from Jordyn Vaughn, Brooke White and Taylor Cunningham. Defensively, Addison Miller and Kayla Jones added tremendous help in the backcourt and Jaclyn Ward led the team in assists.”
The Bearkats will continue their spring season on April 2 when they travel to Houston to take on the Texas Tornados VBC.
