HUNTSVILLE – No team in the Southland Conference has been more on fire than the Sam Houston State Bearkats, but they will get their biggest test of league play on Thursday when they open up their weekly slate at Houston Baptist.
Following Thursday’s match with the Huskies, the Bearkats will step out of conference for one final time in 2017 when they host Prairie View at noon on Saturday at Johnson Coliseum. Each game can be followed via live stats or by following @BearkatsVB on Twitter.
The Huskies have been nearly as dominant as the Kats since Southland Conference play began, and are just a half game back of the first-place Bearkats entering Thursday’s tilt. Each of HBU’s six SLC wins have come via sweep with their lone loss coming at Central Arkansas.
Meanwhile the Kats are setting the pace in the Southland with a perfect 6-0 mark, it’s best start since starting 6-0 in 1993.
HBU has done their work behind one of the stoutest defenses in the league, holding opponents to a SLC-low .161 percentage. But no team has been better since the start of conference play in that category than the Bearkats, who have held their opponents to just .101 hitting.
Thursday will feature three of the top outside hitters in the league with HBU’s Bailey Banks leading the league with 3.84 kills per set, while Sam Houston’s duo of Jordyn Vaughn (3.78) and Brooke White (3.62) are right behind her at second and third in the SLC.
