Southland Conference Release

HUNTSVILLE – Taylor Cunningham and Jordyn Vaughn played key roles for Sam Houston State this fall on the court and in the classroom. On Monday, they were recognized for those achievements.

The duo has been named Southland Conference Volleyball All-Academic First-Team honorees, the league office announced. Vaugh and Cunningham make up a pair of the 12-member first team, capping off highly-successful seasons for each.

Vaughn was named First-Team All-Southland Conference after recording 3.81 kills per set alongside a .174 attack percentage. Both marks rank in the league’s top-10 and come during a season in which the outside hitter started 108 sets for the Bearkats.

In the classroom, Vaughn posted a 3.64 GPA while majoring in accounting. The senior helped Sam Houston to a 10-6 record in league action in route to an 11th-straight appearance in the Southland Conference Tournament.

Meanwhile, Cunningham was also named First-Team All-Southland after finishing in the league’s top-10 for attack percentage at .280. The middle blocker raked in 1.19 blocks per set and 2.76 kills per set. The junior started 108 sets and 29 matches for the Kats.

The Huntsville native boasts a 3.82 GPA while majoring in in accounting. At the conclusion of the spring 2017 semester, the Bearkat volleyball program boasted a 3.54 GPA. During the semester, Cunningham recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA.
