HUNTSVILLE – The Bearkat volleyball team turned in a great showing in its spring opener, picking up a tournament championship with an undefeated Saturday in a one-day tournament held at Stephen F. Austin.

The Kats lost just one set in four matches on the day, all played in a 2-out-of-3 format, in front of a tremendous turnout of parents and fans who made the trip to Nacogdoches. The weekend field consisted of the Kats, SFA, Tyler Junior College, Dallas Baptist and Navarro College.

The Bearkats opened up the day by knocking off the SFA (purple) squad in three sets, dropping the first set 25-17 before rally for 25-22 and 15-12 wins in the final two sets to take the match. Sam Houston would follow that up with a 25-18, 25-23 win over TJC and a 25-19, 25-13 win over Navarro College before finishing off the day with a 25-22, 25-16 over SFA (white).  

The event provided the team the opportunity to test various line-ups and player personnel and yieleded demonstrating tremendous team strength in serving and passing. Offensively the Bearkats got great days from Taylor Cunningham, Madison Wallace, Caroline Sheaff, Ashley Lewis, and Jordan Kiley. Defensively, Addie Miller, Ashleigh Traylor, and Amy Martin added tremendous help in the backcourt while Jackie Ward led the team in assists.

Bearkat Volleyball returns to action on Saturday 4/7, at home as they host their second spring tournament here at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
