HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkat volleyball team will be looking to continue riding its wave of momentum after a tournament win a week ago to Dallas this weekend when they face Arkansas and TCU on consecutive days at the SMU Doubletree Classic at Moody Coliseum.
The Kats swept by Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Louisiana Tech last weekend to claim the crown at the Lady Techster Invitational behind tournament MVP Brooke White and all-tournament selections Jordyn Vaughn and Jaclyn Ward. But this week will be a tougher test when they battle the 8-2 Razorbacks for the first time in program history, followed by the Horned Frogs in a weekend that will close out pre-conference play.

The weekend in Ruston was a historical one for seniors Brooke White and Jordyn Vaughn who each reached the 1,000-kill mark for their careers in the Kats’ match against Memphis. Currently the duo ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the Southland in kills per set with White at the top averaging 3.69 kills per set and Vaughn right on her heels with a 3.54 average.
Sam Houston closed out the tournament on fire, hitting at a .251 combined clip in the wins over UAPB and Louisiana Tech. Freshman middle blocker Courtney Littlefield has been a defensive boost for the Kats, averaging 0.75 blocks per set over her last four matches, while Taylor Cunningham has hit .333 from the floor over that same span.
Friday’s opener against Arkansas will be a test with the Hogs having won four of their last five matches, including two of three last weekend in Santa Barbara, Calif. They have only dropped two of their first 10 matches of the year with the two losses coming to No. 19 USC in five sets and to No. 6 Wisconsin.
Meanwhile, the Horned Frogs have opened up with a solid start to their season as well, opening up with a 6-3 mark. TCU swept three matches at the Cowtown Classic to open the year before dropping matches to both Colorado State and No. 15 Florida State a week later before rebounding with two home wins last weekend, falling only to Duke at the Fight In The Fort.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Friday will mark the first meeting between the Bearkats and Razorbacks. It will be the first SEC opponent for Sam Houston since 2014 when it picked up a 3-1 win over Mississippi State.
TCU owns a 6-3 record in the all-time series with the Bearkats, including a 3-0 win last season at the Horned Frog Challenge in early September. Sam Houston will be looking to snap a 5-match losing skid to TCU with the last win coming in 1999.
