HUNTSVILLE – The second season for Sam Houston State volleyball team will kick off on Saturday when the Bearkats open up Southland Conference play at Abilene Christian.

The Kats dropped their final two preconference matches of the season last weekend in Dallas to Arkansas, but that came on the heels of a tournament win in Ruston at the Lady Techster Invitational. Sam Houston continues to boast the two top outside hitters in the SLC with seniors Jordyn Vaughn and Brooke White leading the league in kills per set at 3.55 and 3.38 per set, respectively.
Taylor Cunningham has been on fire the last four matches, hitting .375 in that span with just seven misfires on 80 swings. That has helped the Kats offensively as they have seen their offense surge in those matches, hitting at least .213 in three of their last four and .206 during that time.
The Wildcats had won three in a row before running into a red-hot North Texas squad on Sept. 13 in Denton, falling 3-0 to the Mean Green. They currently hold a 4-8 record under first-year head coach Angela Mooney and rank second in the SLC with 2.36 blocks per set.
That net presence comes primarily from the duo of Lorin McNeil and Lauren Walker, who average 1.08 and 1.07 blocks per set, marks which rank fifth and sixth in the league. They have also gotten a defensive boost from libero Amanda Chapa, who ranks second among Southland players with 4.69 digs per set.
