HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State head volleyball coach Brenda Gray announced the signing of another addition to the Bearkats on Monday, signing Elise Smith to a National Letter of Intent.

Smith comes to the Bearkats as a 6-0 middle blocker from Napoleanville, La., joining fellow signee Breanne Chausse as part of this fall's signing class.

"Elise came to a Texas camp and really enjoyed wht she saw," Gray said. "She saw some YouTube stuff that she liked and she inquired about us. We really were blown away by her immediately. She loved it from the start and it went both ways."

A four-year varsity letterman in volleyball, she is also an all-state javelin thrower in track and field. Smith has led Assumption High School to a stellar run during her volleyball career. An honorable mention all-district player as a freshman and second team all-district choice as a sophomore, Smith led Assumption to the stat semifinals in 2014 and to the state semifinals a year later.

She has followed that up with first-team all-district nods each of the last two years, including another state runner-up finish as a junior. Her team is still currently alive in the Louisiana Division II state playoffs, just one win away from another berth in the state semifinals.

"She’s a combo middle who is very sure of herself," Gray said. "Elise looks like she’s already a junior. Very strong, both physically and mentally and plays with a lot of power. She wants the ball in crucial times and wants it when the game is tight. She’s one of the top volleyball athletes in the state of Louisiana. She is athletic enough to be able to play on the outside, but it’s a matter of where she fits best.
