Bearkats sweep first Southland baseball series

HUNTSVILLE -- First baseman Nick Zaleski and third baseman Seth Hammock blasted home runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to rally Sam Houston State from 3-1 down to a 7-4 victory over Texas-Arlington Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium.

 

The victory gave the Bearkats a Southland Conference baseball series sweep over the Mavericks as Sam Houston upped its season record to  10-4 . The series opened Southland Conference action for both teams.

 

UTA jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as center fielder Michael Choice singled then scored on a double by right fielder Matt Otteman.

 

Zaleski doubled and tallied on a single by left fielder Peter Goudeau as the Bearkats knotted the contest 1-1 in bottom of the fourth inning.

 

Maverick first baseman Ryan Davis blasted a three-run home run in the fifth inning to put UTA up 4-1. The homer scored catcher Chad Comer who walked and catcher Jeff Storms who singled.

 

Bearkat starting pitcher Brent Powers went five and one third innings, giving up seven hits and four runs while walking one and striking out three. Matt Shelton came out of the bull pen in the sixth inning to pick up his four victory on the mound this season. Sean Weatherford pitched the final two innings for his third save of the season.
