FRISCO – The Sam Houston State baseball team had a pair of players named to the Southland Conference All-Academic team on Tuesday, per a release by league officials.
Wesneski, who was taken in the sixth round of the MLB Draft last week by the New York Yankees, landed on the team for the second straight year after being a second-team all-academic choice in 2018.
A first-team all-SLC selection in 2019, the Cypress native was an automatic selection to the team due to his 3.78 GPA in accounting. The honor came after his best year as a Bearkat this season, going 8-4 with a career-low 3.32 ERA while leading the Southland Conference with 110 strikeouts and innings pitched (105.2).
Mikolajchak’s honor was the second straight year he was named to the all-academic second team after also doing so in 2018. A General Business major with a 3.91 GPA, he too was taken in the MLB Draft last week, being selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 11th round.
The right-handed pitcher from Klein Collins HS has 22 saves in his Bearkat career, just one shy of the SHSU record, and was an honorable mention all-SLC choice in 2019. He went 5-4 this season in 23 total appearances, saving seven games, and sporting a 3.90 ERA with a career-high 76 strikeouts and just 17 walks in 64.2 innings.
