Game Story: Donica Marvels, Kats move to 13-0 in Southland play (4/13)
HUNTSVILLE –
When Sam Houston made history in 2016 winning both the Southland Conference regular season and tournament title while welcoming 19 freshmen and several other first-year players, many began setting their sights towards a historic 2017.

The Bearkats delivered. Sam Houston ran off 13-straight victories to open Southland Conference play, sweeping Lamar, A&M-Corpus Christi, Abilene Christian and Nicholls before capturing the opening game, 3-2 at Stephen F. Austin on April 13.

The victory marked the best start to a season in Sam Houston history and second-best in Southland Conference history, only to Lamar's 14-0 start in 1984. Dating to May 15, 2016, Sam Houston won 18 consecutive league games, the best in the history of the conference.

The win streak propelled Sam Houston to a No. 29 ranking per Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and saw several notables across the way. In the 13 wins, Sam Houston hit a whopping .359 while averaging 9.92 runs per game. On the mound, the staff posted a 3.23 ERA while limiting opponents to a .255 average.

With home series wins against the Cardinals, Islanders and Colonels, Sam Houston extended its dominance at Don Sanders Stadium. The Bearkats would go on to win every three-game Southland Conference home series for a third-straight year.
