HUNTSVILLE – Following a weekend against teams from the top of the SEC, the Sam Houston State Bearkats return to The Don on Tuesday to kick off a midweek series against Prairie View.
Tuesday’s series opener will be aired live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app with Matt Pedersen on the call. Each game can be followed via Statbroadcast or by following @BearkatsBSB on Twitter.
Fans planning on attending are encouraged to park in lot on the west side – press box side – of Bowers Stadium upon entry to The Don. Those wishing to purchase tickets in advance can do so HERE.
Sam Houston split its midweek series last week at home against Wright State before heading to Minute Maid Park to take part in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic over the weekend. The Kats kicked off the weekend with a bang on Friday, rallying from three runs down in the ninth inning to force extra innings against No. 12 Vanderbilt before Hunter Hearn delivered a walk-off homer in the 10th.
The Kats would drop the next two games of the weekend, falling 7-2 to No. 7 Kentucky on Saturday before dropping its tournament finale on Sunday, 4-1 to No. 21 Mississippi State.
Blake Chisolm was named to the Shriners Classic all-tournament team after reaching base in seven of 11 plate appearances, including Sam Houston’s first inside-the-park home run since 2013 in the win over Vanderbilt.
Despite going up against some of the best pitching in the SEC over the weekend, Sam Houston still enters its series with Prairie View sporting a .293 team batting average through 11 games with a collective OPS of .918. Hearn continues to lead the Bearkats with 13 RBI on the strength of four home runs, while Andrew Fregia has driven in 11 of his own. Trey Ochoa has reached base in each of his last eight games entering Tuesday with three multi-hit games in his last five times in the lineup and
Meanwhile, Prairie View will be continuing its stretch of 12 consecutive games away from home to open its season. The Panthers dropped all three games on opening weekend in New Orleans against Alabama State, Alcorn and Illinois-Chicago before cracking the win column a week later with a win over UH Victoria. They kicked off SWAC play over the weekend with three at Grambling State, picking up a victory in the middle game of the series.
