SAN ANTONIO – The Sam Houston State Bearkats hit four home runs, including two by Jack Rogers, to finish off a sweep of UIW in the regular-season finale for both teams with a 7-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field.

Rogers finished with three hits – all for extra bases – and drove in four runs to lead the offense. Two of those hits were two-run homers, giving him five for the year and four RBI in his first multi-homer game of his career. In all Sam Houston (38-18, 24-6 SLC) finished with 12 hits in the game with eight going for extra bases. Andrew Fregia continued his scorching play of late too, going 3-for-4 and finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

On the hill, Hayden Wesneski moved to 6-3 on the season with a solid start. He pitched into the seventh on 98 pitches, going 6.2 innings with three strikeouts while allowing three runs on six hits. Brad Demco and Dakota Mills came on to take care of the final 2.1 innings with Mills striking out two of the five batters he faced.

The Bearkat win denied UIW (29-26, 13-17 SLC) a berth in next week’s Southland Conference Tournament and moved Sam’s win streak to 12 in a row over the past four seasons. Luke Taggart took the loss, falling to 4-5 on the season. He pitched 6.0 innings and gave up just five hits, but three of those left the ballpark and accounted for four of the five runs he surrendered.

Fregia opened up the scoring in the first inning to kick off the scoring and two innings later Rogers got in on the act, blasting a two-run shot over the center field wall to put the Kats up 3-0.

UIW got one back in the bottom of the third on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Kyle Bergeron, but Hunter Hearn quickly got that run back when he led off the Bearkat fourth with a solo blast to left field.

Wesneski put up a zero in the bottom of the fourth, but was touched up for a pair of runs in the fifth. A one-out walk hurt him in that frame, setting things up for an RBI triple by Ridge Rogers and another RBI by Bergeron on a grounder that cut the lead to 4-3.

The Kats pushed the lead back to 5-3 in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Ben Haefner that scored Hearn. An inning later Rogers crushed his second homer of the day, a two-run shot to the opposite field that gave the Kats a 7-3 advantage.

With the regular season in the bag, the Kats will now turn their attention to the Southland Conference Tournament. They will enter the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed and will face either New Orleans or Nicholls, pending the result of the final league game of Saturday between New Orleans and Northwestern State, at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Constellation Field in Sugar Land.
