FRISCO – Sam Houston State junior Kai Mitchell has been named the Southland Conference player of the week, according to a release by league officials on Monday afternoon.

Mitchell continued his outstanding play last week, helping the Bearkats to a pair of wins and running SHSU’s record to 5-0 in league play, keeping the Kats as the lone team left unbeaten in the league. The junior hit 60 percent of his shots from the field for the week and averaged 16.0 points, 9.0 boards and 2.5 blocks per game in wins over A&M-Corpus Christi and at Houston Baptist.

He has now reached double figures in all five of the Kats’ SLC games and is averaging 15.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game vs league opponents while shooting 62.3 percent from the field in those games.

Mitchell opened last week with a solid night in a 22-point win over A&M-Corpus Christi, hitting 7-for-12 from the field for 14 points while bringing in nine boards and rejecting a pair of shots. He was even better in a road win at HBU on Saturday, scoring 10 of the Kats’ first 14 points and finishing with 18 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in the victory over the Huskies.

Mitchell currently fourth in the SLC with 7.5 rebounds per game and third with a .539 field-goal percentage.

The Bearkats will look to keep their undefeated start to league play going on Wednesday when they travel to Northwestern State for a date with the Demons at Prather Coliseum.
