HUNTSVILLE - With the season underway, the Sam Houston State men’s basketball signed three high school seniors to National Letters of Intent Wednesday to help the program continue its winning ways in the future.

The Bearkats have reloaded with:

• Jarren Cook | G | 6-4 | Carrollton | Newman Smith HS

• Bryce Monroe | PG | 5-11 | San Francisco | Bishop Riordan HS

• Kian Scroggins | F | 6-7 | Raymore, Mo. | Raymore–Peculiar High School

Jarren Cook | G | 6-4 | Carrollton | Newman Smith HS

Cook was the District 11-5A Most Valuable Player at Newman Smith High School as a junior after averaging 24 points a game. He was selected to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region 5 Team and was the District 14-5A Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore in 2017-18.

“We are extremely excited about adding Jarren to our family,” Hooten said. “Jarren has a college-ready body and is very mature on the court for his age. He is a willing defender and has shown that he can make shots. Jarren will be a great part to our system and is a high character young man that will also fit right into our culture from day one.”

Bryce Monroe | PG | 5-10 | San Francisco | Bishop Riordan HS

Monroe averaged 17.7 points, 4.3 assists and three rebounds a game for Bishop Riordan High School as a junior last season. He was selected to the San Francisco All-City Team and was a first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League honoree, which is one of the most competitive basketball conferences in California.

“Bryce is a dynamic and multi-faceted guard,” Hooten said. “We loved his total package the minute we laid eyes on him last spring. He will fall right in line with some of the outstanding point guards we have in our program now and in the past.”

Kian Scroggins | F | 6-7 | Raymore, Mo. | Raymore–Peculiar High School

Scroggins was an all-conference and all-district selection for Raymore-Peculiar High School as a junior last season. He was also named to the all-state tournament team. He averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and shot 56.5 percent from the floor.

“We are very happy to find such a quality young big man like Kian,” Hooten said. “Kian will be a perfect fit for our system and the Southland Conference. We felt like he had a lot of the same attributes as Kai (Mitchell) or Aurimas (Majauskas) from the past. Not to mention, he is an eager learner and a fabulous kid.”
