HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State Bearkat men's basketball head coach Jason Hooten added a final piece to the 2017-18 roster on Tuesday with the addition to forward Amarillo Caprock High School standout Manny Gatkek.

“This will finish up the 2017 recruiting class for us, and is a great addition,” Hooten said. “Manny is a tremendous young man with a very high ceiling. He hasn't even begun to scratch the surface and his best basketball is ahead of him."

Gatkek is a 6-8 forward who has only gotten better every year leading up to joining the Kats this season. As a junior at Caprock he averaged 11.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game on his way to first team all-district honors.

Last year he upped his game even more, averaging a double-double with 14.0 points, 10.4 rebounds and 6.5 blocks per game in earning first team all-district honors once again and a place on the Amarillo Golden Spread team.

All of that helped lead the Caprock Longhorns to a school-record 23 wins and a berth in the Class 5A state playoffs, the school's first since 2009.

“Manny is extremely long and athletic with a 6-11 wing span,” Hooten said. “Additionally, he is really skilled and can really dribble, pass and shoot the ball out to the 3-point line. For a guy with his height he can really put the ball on the floor and get to the rim, but right now he just needs to focus on get bigger and stronger.”
