Full Release From Southland Conference
FRISCO – Sam Houston State Bearkat point guard John Dewey III was named to the Southland’s Preseason All-Conference second team in an announcement by league officials on Tuesday afternoon.
Dewey was the lone Bearkat to be named to either the first or second team, and was an automatic choice after being named to the All-SLC third team at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season.
A Bronx, N.Y., native, Dewey provided the Bearkats with an instant spark from the point guard spot as a sophomore after transferring from Blinn College. He burst on the scene with 18 points and five assists in his first game as a Kat, and just two games into the season took over the starting spot with 21 points against Southern and proceeded to start the final 32 games of the year.
He would go on to average 10.0 points and 4.9 assists per game for the season, finishing second in the Southland in assists. Dewey shot 35.3 percent from beyond the arc and 73.9 percent from the foul line as a sophomore and had 13 games where he scored in double digits.
His performances in consecutive wins over Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi helped earn him SLC Player of the Week honors, while his 31-point outburst against Abilene Christian late in the year was the first 30-point game by a Bearkat since 2013.
The announcement comes in advance of next week’s Southland Conference Basketball Social Media Day at the Toyota Center in downtown Houston on Monday, Oct. 16. Head coach Jason Hooten and women’s head coach Brenda Nichols will be in attendance with a 1:00 p.m. time slot for that day.
The league’s preseason order of finish will be announced that morning, prior to the beginning of Social Media day.
