The Sam Houston State Bearkats are off to a 2-1 start in Southland Conference play, but will face arguably their toughest league test to date on Wednesday when they travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The game is set to tip off at 7:00 p.m. at Dugan Wellness Center and can be watched on the Islander Digital Network. Fans can follow along via live stats, or get updates by following @BearkatsWBB on Twitter.

The Bearkats have responded from dropping its league opener to win each of its last two games over both Central Arkansas and UIW, but will be trying to get to 3-1 in the league for the first time since 2015-16.

Sam Houston’s 73.5 points per game still ranks as third in the Southland, but the Kats will be tested against one of the league’s top defenses as the Islanders allow just 57.8 points per game and force 21.0 turnovers per contest as well.

The Kats exploded for 47 points in the second half on Saturday at UIW, rolling to a 20-point win after a slow opening 20 minutes. Amber Leggett and Lydia Baxter each picked up double-doubles in the win, while Jaylonn Walker’s 14 points in the first half kept the Bearkats within striking distance.

Meanwhile, the Islanders have won three of their last four games with the lone loss in that stretch coming against preseason SLC favorite Lamar. Dalesia Booth is the go-to hand for Royce Chadwick’s bunch, leading the team with 14.2 points per game while Alexes Bryant is right behind her with 10.1 points and a team-best 6.1 rebounds per contest.

The Islanders lead the all-time series 18-9, including wins in six of the last seven meetings. The Kats’ last win in the series came during the 2015-16 season, but SHSU will be in search of its first win on the island since 2013.
