Brenda Nichols’ and her squad led late in the third period on Wednesday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, but were outscored 26-11 by the Islanders to close the game, including a 14-4 run in the final minutes to pick up a 62-48 victory. The Cardinals sit atop the Southland so far this season winning 11 of their first 12 games to put them in the driver’s seat for the regular season title with six games left. Lamar leads all Southland members in points per contest with 79.0 and outscores their opponents by an average of 16.6 points a game, a mark second to Stephen F. Austin.

The Bearkats have picked up their play as of late with three straight games that have came down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter, but have failed to pick up a win in that stretch.

Baxter has been on a mission as of late, scoring in double-digits in four straight matches while putting up a double-double in two of those matches. Rachel Harrell has also began to heat up from behind the arc canning two triples in the last three games, including four against Abilene Christian.

Chastadie Barrs, who has put up three triple-double performances on the year, is the juice of the Cardinal squad as she leads the league in assists (6.6) and is tops in the nation in steals (6.4) while also scoring 12.3 points a game. Moe Kinard is the leading scorer for the Cardinals averaging the third highest points per game at 16.7. Kiandra Bowers has been a major post presence for the Cardinals as she nearly averages a double-double (10.0 ppg, 9.6 rpg) while shooting a league high 58.2 percent from the field.
