HUNTSVILLE - Sam Houston State head women’s basketball coach Ravon Justice unveiled the Bearkats’ 2019-20 slate on Tuesday.
A year after putting together one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation, Justice’s group will host 14 of their 29 games at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum, beginning with the season opener on Nov. 6 against Howard Payne.
The Kats will also host the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, Jarvis Christian and Wiley College as part of the nonconference slate, in addition to half of their Southland Conference games as the league schedule expands to 20 games in 2019-20.
The road nonconference schedule is daunting with trips to Texas Tech (Nov. 14), Ole Miss (Nov. 26) and Oral Roberts (Nov. 30) ending the month of November after two straight home contests to open things up.
December is bookended with games against Jarvis Christian (Dec. 3) and Wiley College (Dec. 30), but is filled in the middle with road trips to UTSA (Dec. 8) and Oklahoma (Dec. 15) along with the start of SLC play with a road swing to Northwestern State (Dec. 18) and New Orleans (Dec. 21).
Sam Houston will be looking at league play the rest of the way once the calendar turns to January with four home games and four road games making up the first month of the new year. The Kats will kick off February at home with rival Stephen F. Austin (Feb. 1), a month that has five of its eight games on Sam Houston’s home floor.
The Kats have just two regular-season games on the schedule for March, closing out the home schedule with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (March 4) before battling SFA (March 7) in Nacogdoches in the regular-season finale.
The Southland Conference Tournament is once again set for the Merrell Center in Katy and is scheduled to begin March 12 with opening-round games.
Sam Houston returns 10 players from its team that went 16-13 a year ago and 11-7 in SLC play, winning 12 more games overall and 10 more games in league play from the previous season.
