HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State continues its five-game homestand on Wednesday, welcoming Texas Southern for a 6:30 p.m. tip off from Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

Sam Houston was held to 28 percent shooting in a 79-50 loss against Rice last time out. The Kats missed their first 14 shots from behind the arc. Despite the loss, for a second-straight game, Kiera McKinney matched a career high with 15 points.

The matchup will be the 15th all-time between Sam Houston and Texas Southern. The Bearkats are 11-3 all-time against the Tigers but maintain just a 4-3 margin in Huntsville.

The Kats won the last two against Texas Southern including a thrilling 53-51 victory in Houston on Dec. 14, 2015.

Sam Houston ranks seventh nationally for the fewest fouls (48) and are 16th in offensive rebounds per game (18). The squad is also 25th in rebounds per game (46.0) and 37th in 3-point field goal percentage defense (25.0).

On the heels of its first Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship in program history, Texas Southern was selected as the Preseason favorite to win the conference crown in 2017-18.

Texas Southern guard and 2017 SWAC Women’s Basketball Tournament MVP Joyce Kennerson, who led the league in scoring at 18.3 points per game, was selected to the Preseason First Team along with fellow teammate Artavia Ford who was selected at the forward spot. Texas Southern’s Breasia McElrath was tabbed as a Second Team All-SWAC selection at forward after a solid campaign last season.

The Tigers picked up their first win, defeating New Mexico State, 66-50 last Friday.
