HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats have another opportunity to pick up their first Southland win of the season on Saturday against Lamar at the Montagne Center.

The game can be watched online at ESPN3 or on the WatchESPN app. Live stats are available at and fans can also get updates as they happen by following @BearkatsWBB on Twitter.

A late rally by Northwestern State on Wednesday denied the Bearkats their first win in league play while the Cardinals had to wait until Thursday to move to 5-1 in the SLC. Their game vs UIW was delayed a day due to the inclement weather, but it did not hinder Lamar who forced 35 turnovers in a 23-point win.

Lamar is the highest scoring team in the league at 78.8 points per game and no team forces more turnovers than the Cardinals, also leading the league with 27.5 opponent turnovers per game and a turnover martin of +13.8 which is nearly eight full turnovers per game more than anyone else in the league.

Moe Kinard leads the Cards in scoring with 15.8 points per game, but it is guard Chastadie Barrs who really makes Lamar go. She averages 12.7 points per game, but also ranks 20th in the country with 6.1 assists per game. More impressive, though, are her 103 steals on the year. That has helped her post a pair of triple-doubles this season and she leads the nation with 6.44 steals per game.

Sam Houston will need to take advantage of the Cardinals’ aggressiveness to get its own offense going, having not posted more than 65 points in any outings during its current nine-game losing streak. Akarian Morgan turned in her best game as a Bearkat on Wednesday with 17 points against the Lady Demons, nailing a trio of 3-point baskets in the effort.

Jenniffer Oramas still leads the Kats with 10.9 points per game, while Lydia Baxter’s 6.3 rebounds per game continues to pace the squad.
