HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State head women’s basketball coach Ravon Justice has announced the addition of five student-athletes to the roster for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
Joining the Kats for this season are guards Jaylonn Walker (Calvert, Texas), Faith Cook (Baytown, Texas) and Destini Whitehead (Athens, Texas), along with forward Amber Leggett (Navarre, Fla.) and center Courtney Cook (San Antonio, Texas).
Walker, along with both Faith and Courtney Cook join the Kats as transfers, while Whitehead and Leggett each come to Huntsville from the high school ranks.
Jaylonn Walker • G • 5-7 • Calvert, Texas / Calvert HS / McLennan CC
Walker was the second leading scorer in the NTJCAC as a sophomore, pumping in 16.7 points per game for the Highlassies, earning all-conference and all-Region V honors along the way. She reached double figures in 23 of her 27 games last season and also averaged 5.5 rebounds per game. Her season high came against Cisco when she poured in 31 points. Her time at MCC came on the heels of a standout career at Calvert High School where she was named an all-distrit and all-state selection.
Faith Cook • G • 5-2 • Baytown, Texas / Goose Creek HS / UTEP
Cook will have to sit out the 2018-19 season due to NCAA transfer rules, but will be eligible for the 2019-20 season. She spent the last two seasons at UTEP after a high school career at Goose Creek High School that saw her earn all-region and all-state honors in addition to being named the No. 27 point guard in the nation for the class of 2016 according to ESPN’s HoopGurlz. While at UTEP she played in all 31 games both seasons, including starting the final 18 for the Miners in 2017-18. Cook led UTEP with 3.2 assists per game while averaging 5.8 points per game and hitting 35.4 percent from beyond the arc.
Destini Whitehead • G • 5-8 • Athens, Texas / Tenaha HS
Whitehead finished up her high school career at Tenaha High School after playing three years at John Tyler High School. As a sophomore she averaged 17 points per game and led John Tyler to a No. 6 state ranking in the final TABC poll and a year later was named a first team all-state choice. She averaged 17.8 points per game for the entirety of her prep career.
Amber Leggett • F • 5-11 • Navarre, Fla. / Choctawhatchee HS
The younger sister of current New York Jet Jordan Leggett and current Texas Tech defensive back Thomas Leggett, Amber closed out her prep career at Choctaw High School in 2017-18 where she helped lead her team to a 21-4 record and their fourth state Final Four appearance in the past six years. She averaged a double-double in the state tournament, scoring 18 points with 12 rebounds against Fort Myers in the state title game. As a senior she led her team with averages of 14.6 points on 57 percent shooting with eight rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.5 blocks per game.
Courtney Cook • C • 6-2 • San Antonio, Texas / Brennan HS / UIW / Tyler JC
Cook originally played at UIW as a true freshman in 2016-17 after a solid career at San Antonio’s Brennan High School. She played in 17 games for the Cardinals before transferring to Tyler Junior College for her sophomore campaign. There she played in 31 games for the Apaches, averaging 3.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
