HUNTSVILLE – After capturing the championship and runner-up at the Southland Conference Track & Field Outdoor Championships a week ago, the awards rolled in for Sam Houston State on Monday.

Chris Jefferson has been named Men's Outstanding Running Events Performer while David Self has been tabbed Men's Coach of the Year, following the first outdoor title since 2006. The championship marked the first time for the program to sweep both indoor and outdoor events.

Tristyn Allen picked up Women's Outstanding Field Events Performer while Baylee Lara was named Women's Freshman of the Year. The duo played an integral role in the Bearkats' runner-up performance, the fourth-straight top-two outdoor finisher for the program.

Jefferson helped Sam Houston capture 28 points, taking the top spot in the 100-meter dash (10.31) as well as the 200 meters (20.61). The sophomore also served as the final leg of the 4x100-meter relay squad that took second with a time of 40.33.

Allen also posted a dominant performance of the field side, winning the triple jump with a mark of 40 feet, 9 ½ inches. The sophomore also took runner-up in the long jump with a personal-best 19 feet, 5 ½ inches, adding a combined 18 points between the two events.

Meanwhile, Lara provided a big boost in the heptathlon, taking first with 4,919 points. The freshman took first in the 100-meter hurdles (13.83), third in the long jump (17 feet, 11 inches) and third in the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches) to highlight action. Lara took runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles (13.71).

Sam Houston will send 14 athletes to the NCAA Division I 2017 Outdoor Track & Field Championships – West Preliminary this Thursday through Saturday in Austin. Jefferson will compete in both the 100 meters and 200 meters while Allen will participate in the triple jump.
