HUNTSVILLE- With their season well under way the Sam Houston State Bearkats will travel to Lubbock this weekend to compete in the Texas Tech Open. The meet will run from Friday through Saturday.
The Bearkats are currently ranked seventh in the South Central region per the USTFCCA Regional TFRI (Track & Field Rating Index). The ranking is out of 35 schools, and they are the highest ranking school in the Southland Conference.
SHSU is one week removed from the release of the NCAA D-1 Men’s Indoor Track & Field Rating Index ranking the Kats 26th in the nation.
The team responded with some great individual performances at the Houston Invitational & Multi this past weekend. The most notable performance of the meet on the women's side came from senior Tristyn Allen who set a new school record in the triple jump. Allen, who held the previous record (42 6.25”) set a new benchmark with a jump of 42’ 9”.
For both the men and women’s side Sam Houston will hope to see performances worthy of qualifying for nationals this coming competition.
Senior sprinter Chris Jefferson fastest time of 20.85 in the he 200-meter race has him ranked seventh which, entering this week, would qualify him for nationals. Freshman Jo’vaughn Martin also holds a 200-meter best of 20.86 (ninth) that would currently qualify him for nationals.
Some other athletes to keep an eye for as they strive to make nationals include: Fabian McCall, Clayton Fritsch, Allen and Baylee Lara.
