The members of Sam Houston's 17 intercollegiate sports teams celebrated the beginning of the 2015-16 sports season with the annual Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) Picnic Monday night at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.

With the stadium's big new video / scoreboard shining over the playing field to welcome back the Bearkats, the more than 350 student-athletes who represent Sam Houston on the playing field participated in a variety of games.

Players tried their hands at different sports, participating in volleyball, baseball, golf, tennis, soccer, basketball and other games.

Prior to the fun on the field, the student-athletes from all the teams ate a picnic dinner in the stands.

"Since we started the year with a picnic in September 2005 to celebrate our first Southland Commissioner's Cup, the SAAC Picnic has become an annual event for our student-athletes," Sam Houston Director of Athletics Bobby Williams said. "One of the great things about this university is the way all of our student-athletes support each other. This is a great way for the teams to mix and get to know one another in a fun atmosphere. We're looking for another great year in 2015-16."

Since 2000, Sam Houston has won 32 championships, five Southland Commissioner's Cup All-Sports titles, four Southland men's all-sports cups, one women's all-sports title and six league post-season tournament titles.

Soccer and volleyball have already started with their 2015 schedule. Cross country and football begin action this week.
