LAKE CHARLES, La. — The Sam Houston soccer team had some good looks at the goal but could not find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to McNeese in the season opener on Friday.
Â
The Cowgirls finally ended a scoreless tie in the 85th minute. Bearkat goalkeeper Tatum Krueger made a great save on a shot from the right side, but the ball bounced right to Rachel Young who found the back of the net in the middle of the goal.
Â
Krueger finished with four saves in the match.
"We played extremely well in this match away from home. We posed the ball majority of the game," head coach Sonia Curvelo said. "Defensively we are more organized. Tactically our team well on both sides of the ball. It was unlucky for us to not come home with three points. I felt the team's performance today deserved to come home with the three points. We will continue to improve our attacking mentality and spend more time working on striking the ball outside the box and get on the scoreboard."
Â
Both teams had some scoring opportunities in the first half, but neither could break through to get on the board.
Â
Sam Houston finished with four shots on goal and 13 shots overall. Katie Leal, Landri Townsend, Kailey Pena and Jasmine Marquez accounted for the shots on goal.
