DON KING III INTERVIEW ON BEARKAT SPORTS NETWORK
For the first time since the 2010 season, Sam Houston preseason football camp features a battle for the starting quarterback position.
Two sophomores and a redshirt freshman are getting most of the reps in practice with the goal of finding a starter for the Bearkats’ August 23 season opener at Eastern Washington.
Don King III, a 6-2 210-pound product from Waxahachie, comes into camp as the number one quarterback. But fellow sophomore Jared Johnson, a 6-1, 215-pounder from South Grand Prairie, missed spring ball due to injury.
John Roderique, who red-shirted in 2013 as a true freshman from Webb City, Missouri, also is in the mix.
“There’s no time table on when we’ll make a decision on our starting quarterback,” SHSU head coach K. C. Keeler said. “We’ve got some kids who are going to compete.”
Both King and Johnson red-shirted in 2012 and saw action mostly in reserved roles behind All-Southland QB Brian Bell last season.
King played in seven games, producing 126 yards total offense. He rushed for touchdowns in the HBU and Nicholls victories. Johnson played in 10 games, starting at Central Arkansas and in the NCAA preliminary round against Southern Utah. He totaled 214 yards total offense.
Roderique was the 2011 Missouri Class 4A offensive player of the year. Playing for his father coach John Roderique, he led Webb City to a 45-0 record from sophomore to senior years including three consecutive state championships.
King says that all three are looking forward to the competition.
“We all know it’s going to be a battle every day,” King said. “The other guys know we all have to come out here and compete every day. They’re going to do their best to make me better and I’m going to do my best to make them better.”
