HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats clinched the series with Texas Southern on Saturday, scoring in six of eight innings in a 21-12 victory at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Kats (6-5) finished with 16 hits and drew a dozen walks against TSU (6-6) pitching, scoring its most runs since the 2016 season in the process.
Carlos Contreras continued his big weekend with a 5-RBI game, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and a 3-run homer in the second inning, giving him 11 RBI in the first two games of the set. He was one of six Kats with multiple hits or RBI in the game.
Justin Wishkoski reached base in all six of his plate appearances, mashing a 2-run homer in the opening frame and scoring four times in the game.
Clayton Chadwick joined them with four runs scored and
Myles Jefferson and
Wes Folse each finished with three RBI apiece.
Coltin Atkinson got the start, but only lasted 3.2 innings, giving way to reliever
Blaine Romero who picked up his first win as a Bearkat with 1.2 innings of relief.
Hunter Murray struck out a pair in 1.0 innings, while
Gavi Coldiron tossed the final 2.2 innings.
For TSU, Josiah Castro took the loss, allowing seven runs in five innings of work as one of four TSU arms to take the hill.
The Kats and Tigers will close out the weekend series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
