CELINA — The Sam Houston softball team wrapped up the Tracy Beard Classic with a pair of losses on Sunday.
The Bearkats (4-6) lost by three against nationally ranked Kentucky and finished the weekend by going 1-1 against South Dakota following a loss Sunday.
No. 15 Kentucky 5, Sam Houston 2
Sam Houston hung around with No. 15 Kentucky but could not overcome an early deficit in a 5-2 loss at the Tracy Beard Classic on Sunday.
The Wildcats scored two runs in the first inning and added another in the third off starter
Regan Dunn who went the distance, allowing five runs on eight hits.
The Bearkats cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third.
Tricia Yarotsky led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out before coming around to score on an infield single by
Ellie Grill.
Sam Houston's final run came in the sixth.
Brailey Wasik and
Brodie Quinlan and Yarotsky all walked to load the bases and
Julia Herzinger drew a free pass to bring in a run.
South Dakota 8, Sam Houston
South Dakota scored three runs in the first and three in the second en route to an 8-1 win over the Bearkats to close out the tournament.
The teams played twice over the weekend with Sam Houston taking the opener 6-1 on Friday.
Brailey Wasik,
Elia Hebel,
Jordan Peno and
Hannah Scheaffer all hit safely for the Bearkats. Sam Houston's run came in the fifth inning when Scheaffer singled and Peno came around to score when Scheaffer was caught in a rundown.
The Bearkats will stay on the road to play at Prairie View on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
