Kats earn split with GCU

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston rallied from five runs down to split the opening Western Athletic Conference series with Grand Canyon at the Bearkat Softball Complex on Friday.

After dropping the opener 3-2 in extra innings, the Bearkats (10-19 overall, 1-1 WAC) fell behind 5-0 in the first inning. They started chipping away after that and would go on to win game two 9-6.

Sam Houston scored two runs in the second when Jordan Peno led off with a double to right center field and moved to third on a fielder's choice. Hannah Scheaffer walked to load the bases and back-to-back RBI singles by Tricia Yarotsky and Emily Telg cut the lead to three.

The Bearkats took the lead with a five-run third inning that got started with consecutive singles by Brodie Quinlan and Peno. Kylie Hobbs followed with an RBI double, and a fielding error made it 5-3.

Scheaffer made GCU pay with a three-run blast over the wall in right to give Sam Houston a 7-5 lead.

The Antelopes got a run back in the fifth, but the Kats had an answer in the bottom of the sixth.

Chandler Talbot and Quinlan had a pair of singles to begin the frame. Peno brought in a run with a fielder's choice and another run scored because of an error to help seal the victory.

Daryn Gramms got the win in relief. She allowed just one run in 6 2/3 innings to improve to 4-2 on the season.
