HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston jumped out to a big lead then fended off a late rally to clinch a Western Athletic Conference series win with a 6-5 victory over Abilene Christian at Bearkat Softball Complex on Saturday.
The Bearkats improved to 21-31 on the season and 11-10 in WAC play after also winning game one 2-0 on Friday.
Sam Houston grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Tricia Yarotsky and
Elia Hebel hit back-to-back one-out singles.
Jordan Peno followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Yarotsky.
The Kats tacked on two more runs in the second.
Haleigh Carter reached on a fielder's choice, and
Emily Telg cleared the bases with a no-doubt home run to straight up center field to make it 3-0.
Sam Houston kept rolling in the third when Yarotsky was hit by a pitch and stole second, and Hebel reached on a throwing error. That setup a two-run single up the middle by
Julia Herzinger.
The Kats pushed the lead to 6-0 in the fifth when Hebel drew a lead-off walk and moved to third on a double by Herzinger. Another error allowed Hebel to race home for what would prove to be the game-winning run.
The Wildcats scored two in the sixth and three in the seventh, but
Emma Guindon was able to close it out for her second save of the season.
Regan Dunn was solid in her final home start in the circle. She tossed five scoreless innings, allowing three hits with three strikeouts to earn the victory.
