ARLINGTON — UT Arlington rallied from a two-run deficit to clinch a series victory with a 5-4 win over Sam Houston in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Mavericks tied the three-game WAC series with a 11-0 victory in the first game after the Bearkats (22-34 overall, 12-12 WAC) took the opener 4-3 on Friday.
After managing just two hits against UTA in the first game Saturday, Sam Houston opened the first inning with a pair of walks by
Ellie Grill and
Haleigh Carter to things cooking. With two outs,
Julia Herzinger singled to center field to plate Carter for a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, but Sam Houston matched those in the second to retake the advantage.
Jordan Peno was hit by a pitch to lead things off then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Kylie Bishop.
Emily Telg followed with an RBI double to right field and came around to score on a single by Carter.
Starting pitcher
Emma Guindon settled down after the first and tossed four scoreless innings to put the Kats in position to win the game. She got an insurance run in the third on an RBI infield single by Bishop, but she gave up a run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to take the loss.
This concludes the regular season for Sam Houston. The Kats earned the No. 6 seed in the WAC Tournament and will have another rematch with No. 7 UTA on Wednesday at noon in an elimination game in Phoenix, Arizona.
