Kats earn split at Tracy Beard Classic

The Bearkats (4-4) broke out the bats in a win over WAC foe UT Arlington before falling to No. 22 North Texas.

Sam Houston will conclude the tournament Sunday with a game against Kentucky at 10 a.m. and the finale against South Dakota at 12:30 p.m.

Kylie Hobbs hit a grand slam as part of a six-run fifth inning to power Sam Houston to a 15-8 victory over UT Arlington in game two of the Tracy Beard Classic on Saturday morning.

The Bearkats exploded at the plate with 17 hits. Hobbs went 3 for 5 and Ellie Grill, Brailey Wasik, Tricia Yarotsky, Elia Hebel and Haley Mountain all had two hits.

Sam Houston took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Hebel singled to lead off the frame and Hannah Scheaffer, who scored three runs, was hit by a pitch. Mountain dropped down a bunt single, and Grill ripped a ball up the middle to drive in the first run before a two-run single by Wasik.

Mountain added an RBI double in the third then the Bearkats blew the game open in the fifth.

Quinlan and Yarotsky had back-to-back infield singles to begin the inning, and Hebel loaded the bases with a hit to left. Scheaffer was once again hit by a pitch to score a run and Jordan Peno singled up the middle to make it 6-1.

Hobbs cleared the bases with her second home run of the season.

The Mavericks answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame, but Sam Houston scored three more in the sixth on a three-run home run by Emily Telg. Julia Herzinger added a RBI single in the seventh, and Hebel drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Daryn Grams got the win in the circle. She allowed two runs on four hits in four innings and recorded four strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Bearkats jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but North Texas broke open a close game with four runs in the fourth inning en route to an 8-2 victory.

Ellie Grill led off the first inning with a single to left field, and back-to-back singles by Kylie Hobbs and Brailey Wasik loaded the bases. Brodie Quinlan plated Grill on a fielder's choice.

UNT tied the game in the bottom of the first and took a 2-1 lead in the second before scoring four more in the fourth and fifth to go up six.

The Bearkats got another run in the sixth when Quinlan hit a lead-off solo shot to left field.
